"The promise of the public plan is a mirage. Its political brilliance is to use free-market rhetoric (more 'choice' and 'competition') to expand government power. But why would a plan tied to Medicare control health spending, when Medicare hasn't? From 1970 to 2007, Medicare spending per beneficiary rose 9.2 percent annually compared to the 10.4 percent of private insurers -- and the small difference partly reflects cost shifting. Congress periodically improves Medicare benefits, and there's a limit to how much squeezing reimbursement rates can check costs. Doctors and hospitals already complain that low payments limit services or discourage physicians from taking Medicare patients."

"When President Obama was on the campaign trail last year, he repeatedly promised that his legislative actions would be transparent and open. In fact, he promised that legislation would be posted on the Internet for 72 hours before a vote. He also promised that legislative debates on health care reform would be telecast on C-SPAN.

"What happened? During the past week, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and a gaggle of other 'progressive' legislators have been in secret meetings on Capitol Hill to craft a health care bill that will nationalize our health care system – cost billions – and still leave millions underinsured.

"Did Obama renege on his 'transparency' pledge? It looks like it. He's reneged because he knows most Americans like their health insurance coverage and don't want to be drafted into a government-run system. They don't want to be punished by Big Brother if they don't get coverage. And, they are deeply concerned about the trillion dollar price tag of this socialist plan to destroy private health insurance in America.

"Obama is acting more like a Soviet bureaucrat than a man who believes in the democratic process. His cronies are acting like Chicago union bosses."

"In Oakland, California, a handful of African-American Christian women found out that their free speech rights had effectively been outlawed. Their Christian witness was interpreted as 'hate.'

"'Hate crimes' bills inevitably create the 'thought police' by giving the federal government jurisdiction over local criminal offenses believed to be 'motivated by prejudice.'

"In Alberta, Canada, a former pastor and head of a Christian organization Stephen Boissoin, sent a letter to a local paper on the issue of sexual orientation. Two weeks later a gay teen was beaten up, and after years of litigation, the pastor was found guilty of violating a 'hate crimes' human rights law because the letter likely exposed gays to hatred and contempt - despite the fact that he had never advocated violence of any sort in his letter or otherwise.

"A judge in New York has ruled evidence of 'hatred' is unnecessary for a prosecutor to pursue a 'hate crimes' case against three men arrested for the death of a homosexual man. . . . concluding prosecutors only need to show that the man, who was beaten and then hit by a vehicle in a robbery attempt, was picked because of his sexual orientation.

"And while artists receive government funding for acclaimed exhibits of Jesus being defiled in urine, and by many other means . . . a 23-year-old man was arrested on hate-crime charges after he threw a Quran in a toilet at Pace University on two separate occasions."
